In the belly of the clock tower, I saw a sleeping arrangement that seemed safe and relativity cosy.
Imagine cutting a giant Coke can in half and the bottom part is empty. I climbed up with him and was amazed to see the structure had a fairly large-sized empty inner base. I inquired how he was able to sleep in the clock tower and he invited me up to see. He later told me he was a homeless youth, kicked out of his parents’ home, and had been living on and off the streets for the past year. My main question to him was why was he climbing the clock tower? His response was, he was going to sleep. As tired as he looked, he entertained me with a short Q and A. As I got closer to the clock tower, I noticed a young man with a backpack getting ready to climb the tower.Ĭuriosity getting the best of me, I stopped him and struck up a conversation. It was a quiet night with hardly anyone in the park. One night, I had a bike ride that was unforgettable.Ī couple of years before the pandemic, I rode through Victoria Park in the mid fall season. If the weather permits and it’s comfortable outside, I usually go for walks or bike rides. There are nights when it is difficult for me to sleep.
Although the clock tower represents Kitchener, figuratively, to me it represents a place of shelter, literally. It is the background of protests, festivals and selfies. In the park, this monument has become a gathering place. The tower is a beautiful piece of our historical architecture and is the only remaining part of the old city hall building that was demolished in 1973. The clock tower in Victoria Park is an iconic Kitchener landmark and symbol, even appearing on city flags.
